How Can it Help Me? We Treat the Cause not only Your Symptoms. Getting well is not a wish. It’s what your body is designed to do–naturally. The AcuGraph Digital Meridian Imaging system lets our doctors digitally scan your acupuncture meridians to determine your energetic pathways and energy levels.  The microbiome of you and your children consists of all the cells that are not human in nature. This includes in the womb and during natural birth.  Diseases are not static. They evolve. Our non-invasive thermographic testing is painless and provides vital information to help us detect and treat certain conditions. Functional integration and holistic health are very similar. You can find out a lot about your health through genetic testing. Our chiropractic and alternative medicine approach is multifactorial and of course, it starts with good nutrition. Kinesiology is a neurological test for biomechanics, balance, function, and range of motion, a measurement of body, mind and chemical health. Functional interconnectivity is a combination of functional medication, functional neurology, nutrition, acupuncture and genetics into a system of examinations, questions and thought. Dr. Trites teaches Functional Integration to other doctors in many disciplines including doctors of chiropractic, traditional medicine, naturopathy, nurse practitioners, acupuncturists and homeopathy. He offers methods of evaluation and provides individualized treatment options for his patients. In traditional medicine, when pain or other symptoms occur your options are medications, therapy, surgery or a combination of these. With functional integration, our doctors at New Leaf evaluates your health to determine why your body is not functioning as it should then develops a treatment plan to naturally correct your body’s underlying dysfunction. When corrected, your body will function as it was designed. This is the difference between traditional and alternative care. In traditional medicine, the goal is immediate relief of pain or other symptoms, in ways that could be a lifetime of treatment. Conversely, functional integration consists of finding and treating the root cause to promote healing. New Leaf believes that health is a process and our patients are responsible for their own health. As a patient, you will learn why your health condition has occurred and what you can do to stop the condition and work to reverse the process. We are your coach. We support you. We teach you. We encourage you. We celebrate with you. And we pivot when things are not on track. Our office is often asked if we treat conditions such as autoimmunity, diabetes, lupus, migraines, or any other diagnosed disease. While we have patients with those conditions, New Leaf Health treats the whole individual with those diseases or conditions. We are not limited to treating the disease itself. He was in and out of doctor’s offices almost weekly—often without any advances in his health. As a young teenager, he took notice of what he was eating and became a stand-out distance runner qualifying and competing in the Boston Marathon while in high school. He used running to help get him through college for graduate and post-graduate programs. His program of choice catered to an abundance of information. He knew many others had similar paths and needed answers. Dr. Trites’ combination of chiropractic and medical knowledge gives him a unique perspective on how to help his patients achieve optimum health. To ensure his patients are getting the most recent and sound advice. He is one of only a handful of doctors in the U.S., completing the three-year program as an Advanced Functional Practitioner through the prestigious Kharrazian Institute. To date, he is the only one in the DFW area doing so. He completed his post-graduate certification through the American Board of Chiropractic Internists in 2006, a certification roughly only 400 of 70,000 U.S. chiropractors have obtained. He also holds certifications in Functional Integration, family practice, applied kinesiology and acupuncture. He is one of only two chiropractors to hold certifications from the American Board of Chiropractic Internists Diplomat and the Clinical Laboratory Scientist through the American Board of Clinical Pathologists. Rachel was raised early in life by her mother to have a view and love of alternative care and a natural approach to health. She has translated this into working hands-on with patients and loves seeing them feel better outside of traditional medical care. Rachel danced competitively in Irish Dancing for over 20 years and still loves doing anything competitive. She became a patient of Dr. Trites in 2018 and he greatly improved her health and helped her to overcome previous injuries along with finding other underlying causes for her symptoms through bloodwork and CPK. She became a member of New Leaf staff and assists the doctors with all patient care. She’s the link between our doctors and patients—a ture liaison. She assists during appointments and treatments, takes fantastic clinical notes, orders lab and other tests, answers patient questions, manages supplement orders, schedules appointments and more. She’s an indispensable member of our staff and no one can resist her smile. When you have questions, there’s a good chance Rachel will have or can get your answers. In her free time, Rachel enjoys Crossfit workouts, hanging out with friends and going two-stepping. Jordan has been with New Leaf Health since 2018 when Dr. Trites moved his practice from the Kansas City area to Dallas. Jordan was previously our front desk person in our Dallas clinic and she now works in our Duncan, Okla., clinic at the front desk to manage appointments and supplement orders and also helps as a patient liaison as needed. She is pictured here with her husband, Dr. DJ, a pharmacist at Duncan Regional Hospital. DJ also provides pharmacology advice to the New Leaf Health clinics as needed. Angela has been the New Leaf Health business manager since 2016 overseeing Dr. Trites’ office in the Kansas City area before moving to Dallas. She manages the overall business operations for the clinics. Angela’s experience includes being a senior corporate communications and public relations professional with broad experience developing and implementing strategic communication plans, driving growth, revenue and market share. She is an analytical, creative leader with a track record of building strong collaborative relationships, leading cross-functional efforts and resolving complex issues. She has a bachelor’s degree in business administration and more than two decades of public relations, marketing and business management experience in the aerospace industry working for Cessna Aircraft in Wichita, Kans., and Bell Helicopter in Fort Worth, Texas. Her business experience and management skills keep the New Leaf offices running smoothly. Our Duncan office is open Monday through Thursday, 8:00 am–5:00 pm Except for when we’re seeing patients in the Dallas office. Dr. Trites will see current patients for a minimum of a 30-minute appointment. During the past three years, Dr. Trites and his mentors have needed more time to evaluate the increasing bombardment of toxins, viruses and inflammation. Many patients require additional time for instruction on diet, nutrition, lifestyle changes and exercise. These assessments cannot be accomplished in a 15-minute, structure-only visit. Dr. Trites has started his final year of a six-year program for the only Advanced Functional Medicine Program in the U.S. provided by the Kharrazian Institute. He will be in the institute’s first graduating class. Part of this education is not only research but how to properly educate and consult with patients to meet their health goals. As you can imagine, this not only takes time in your appointment, but Dr. Trites creates your individualized plan outside of your visit. That said, the need for stress relief, digestion, vascular support, body pain and the occasional “oops” accidents are also important. By all means, Dr. Trites is not dismissing these needs. There are times in your treatment plan when you will need these types of office visits. For now, all chemistry, laboratory evaluations, and full examinations will be performed in the 30-minute or longer appointments with Dr. Trites. NOTE: These changes do not affect patients under 12 years old. Our cancellation policy requires two business days’ notice to cancel or reschedule appointments. The updated policy is at the bottom of this email. Be prepared to sign that you have read and understood the new policy at your next appointment. Updated Appointment Cancellation/Reschedule Policy: We require two business days’ notice to cancel or reschedule appointments. All cancellations (including no-shows) and rescheduled appointments made within two business days of your appointment time will be charged the full fee for the missed appointment. During your next appointment, you’ll be asked to sign that you’ve read and understood the following, “I acknowledge that I have read and fully understood the New Leaf Health Appointment Cancellation/Reschedule Policy and authorize New Leaf Health to immediately and automatically charge my credit card on file if I miss a schedule appointment, or if I cancel or reschedule within two business days of my scheduled appointment.” The information provided on this website is for informational purposes only and is not intended as a substitute for professional medical advice, diagnosis or treatment. This approach, referred to as functional wellness, is the foundation of our practice and has enabled us to help hundreds of patients manage and heal chronic health issues. Using a variety of tools, including neurological tests and comprehensive laboratory tests, we assess your metabolism, hormones, immune system, gastrointestinal system, and nervous system, and then create a customized plan to help you regain your health. Our goal is to restore proper function and balance to your body. Your healing plan may include nutritional therapy, herbal medicine, supplements, stress management, detoxification, and lifestyle changes. In conventional medicine, there’s a doctor for every part of your body: cardiologists for the heart, gastroenterologists for the digestive system, neurologists for the brain and nervous system, podiatrists for your feet, and ophthalmologists for your eyes. Often times, these specialists don’t ever consider how other areas of the body might be affecting your overall health. But in functional medicine, we see the body as an interconnected whole, within a larger environment. We work closely with you to get a holistic view of your health—a big-picture perspective. By looking for the commonalities and patterns across all systems, we can offer support and interventions that affect multiple pathways, helping you recover your health faster and more completely. New Leaf’s manifesto for achieving and sustaining great health. Our alternative medicine approach is multifactorial and of course, it starts with good nutrition. Which direction should you go? What do your genetics and lifestyle support? Some patients cannot handle a ketogenic diet and some can’t handle carbs and protein. What nutrients do you need, if any? We test for these nuances. If you are vitamin D deficient which brand should you use for supplementation? We all need to move/exercise but at some point, everyone is no longer a professional athlete. What works best for you and your conditions? Running, yoga, one to five minutes of high intensity or weight training? We also test for these nuances. Each step is an individualized approach splitting our clinic from traditional medicine and other single-approach complementary health offices including most chiropractic, acupuncture, physical therapy, homeopathic and nutritionists. At best, a single-service, stand-alone type medical office can expect resolution in fewer than 33*% of their cases. By putting it all together we create a plan specific for your genetics, lifestyle and stress level using a multifaceted, alternative approach. This combination significantly impacts your health and treatment success.* There are many types of patients—ours are the ones who are open to learning new ideas about how to be healthy and thrive. Our patients: Want to discover the underlying cause of their problems, not just mask the symptoms Are willing to actively participate in their own healing process Understand that making dietary and lifestyle changes is an essential part of sustaining their well-being Understand that drugs or medical interventions can play a role in their health, but usually only for emergencies We see the body as a whole, interconnected system. Patients often come to us with what they think is a single problem, and we uncover that the real problem is actually related to a group of systems that aren’t working together. It’s not uncommon that our patients come to us having been misdiagnosed or told that there is no medical explanation for their symptoms. Fortunately, we know that if you are experiencing symptoms of any kind, there is a root cause. Our job is to help you figure it out. **We treat a wide variety of health problems, including (but not limited to):** The information provided on this website is for informational purposes only and is not intended as a substitute for professional medical advice, diagnosis or treatment. He then went on to explain it takes 20-30 years before an acupuncturist can become proficient in their practice! I thought to myself, why are we learning this if we are going to be ineffective for decades? Not to mention, if someone goes to two different acupuncturists, they rarely have the same diagnosis. It was all very confusing. It was after this class that one of my classmates developed a device that reduced a 20-30 year program to less than three years and created consistency so that from acupuncturist to acupuncturist, the diagnosis/treatment recommendations are the same. This device is as close to blood testing that acupuncturists could gain. For example, if someone had blood drawn in Seattle, it will have the same values if drawn in Dallas. This device, the AcuGraph, is used in our office. Regardless of location or practitioner, a person’s specific test results will be the same.   Recently, the developers of AcuGraph created an extensive training and certification program for AcuGraph. And, I was the first in Texas to complete this program. So, how does AcuGraph work? The test is a gentle, painless, two-minute exam. It measures how much energy is flowing through the different areas of your body. Regardless of the doctor, we are all taught to create balance. It could be a balance of muscles, nutrition, physiology and energy. The AcuGraph measures your imbalances and then I correlate this to your other in-office testing. The program prompts me, the AcuGraph practitioner, on the best way to treat you. Each treatment with the AcuGraph provides the patient a customized treatment. Included in that treatment are graphs and instructions so that you may continue treatments at home. Each report following your graph has the “why” you have imbalances and shows your cumulative progress.   While we’ve had AcuGraph in our office for 17 years, we have not exposed our patients to it to my satisfaction. There’s no good explanation why not but it is what I use to treat my family and our patients should also benefit from such a powerful health tool. I want to encourage people to try AcuGraph so we have created packages to help people heal faster while saving money. If you are interested in AcuGraph, ask which program would be best for you during your next office visit! Acupuncture only – $100 (using results from a previous AcuGraph session) Acupuncture only (3 pack) – $280 (save $20; using previous AcuGraph information) 6 sessions AcuGraph w/acupuncture – $788 (save $292) 12 sessions AcuGraph w/acupuncture – $1,273 (save $887) AcuGraph w/acupuncture + infrared treatment sauna – $230 6 AcuGraph w/acupuncture + infrared treatment sauna – $889 (save $491) 12 AcuGraph w/acupuncture + infrared treatment sauna – $1,486 (save $1,274) We are excited that Doug Crager, Doctor of Pharmacy and the Executive Director of Healthy Habits for Healthy Families, has agreed to be a regular contributor to our newsletter! Dr. Trites often consults with Dr. Crager when it comes to pharmaceuticals. Many of our patients also have questions about medications and their interactions so we thought it would be nice for all of us to be able to benefit from Dr. Crager’s expertise in this area. If there is a topic that you would like to know more about, please email our office at office@choosenewleaf.com. We will send all suggestions to Dr. Crager for his consideration for a future article. For his first article, Angela asked Dr. Crager to share his insight about ivermectin. It’s worth a read! Ivermectin has been a hot topic of discussion over the past year. The antiparasitic has been called everything from “miracle drug” to “horse-dewormer.” Ivermectin was first discovered in 1975 in Japan and was used in the veterinary market. In 1986, ivermectin was registered for human use to treat a variety of diseases, mainly for people of impoverished third-world countries, and has been used safely and effectively in hundreds of millions of people. So, merely referring to ivermectin as a “horse dewormer” is disingenuous. It is the equivalent to calling penicillin just a fish antibiotic or saying aspirin is simply tree bark.  When it comes to COVID, not much is known about the mechanism in which ivermectin works. In a lab, ivermectin shows antiviral activity by stopping the replication of the coronavirus. There have been a plethora of studies conducted on ivermectin’s effectiveness, but in order for a study to be deemed legitimate by the medical community, it has to have an extremely structured design that requires a lot of time and money, something that hospitals have not had a lot of this last year and a half. Most large studies required for approval are funded by big pharma and since large profits aren’t going to be made on a drug that normally costs a few cents per tablet, it’s not worth further investigation. There is a major difference between a lack of evidence proving the effectiveness and proven ineffectiveness after a study has been performed. The main issue with ivermectin and COVID is that people are self-treating with formulations picked up from their local livestock retailer. At proper doses, ivermectin is well-tolerated, but issues come when doses for livestock are ingested. Many of these products have other drugs/ingredients that have not been studied in humans. At my rural hospital in Oklahoma, I have yet to see a case of ivermectin overdose. In closing, ivermectin is much more than how it has been characterized these past several months. If you are considering taking ivermectin, consult your medical provider to be prescribed the appropriate dose and do not, under any circumstances, treat yourself with any product not intended for human use. As many of you already know, Dr. Trites created a charity a few years ago for underserved and underprivileged individuals who are looking to improve their health. Alternative medicine, specifically functional medicine is rarely if ever, covered by health insurance. Dr. Trites has been blessed to have a wonderful donor to keep this charity afloat. Over the past year and a half, the world has changed and there are more people in need now than when we started the charity. We have ramped up our efforts and our mantra is the more healthy a person is the better suited they are to be productive and, eventually, disqualify themselves from needing financial assistance. If you’d like to donate to our 501 (c)(3), you can do that by calling the office or email contacthealthyhabits4@gmail.com for more information. All donations are appreciated. Before you turn your nose up at the thought of eating organ meat, let’s take a look at why it’s a superfood and what it may do for you. Not many foods are worthy of the title “superfood,” however, liver is one of them. Once a popular and treasured food source, liver has fallen out of favor. This is unfortunate because the liver is a nutritional powerhouse. It’s rich in protein, low in calories and packed with essential vitamins and minerals. Regardless of its declining popularity, liver is possibly one of the most nutrient-dense foods on the planet and goes a long way in supplying your body with some wonderful absorbable nutrients! While many people assume that plant-based foods: vegetables and fruits are the most nutrient-dense foods on the planet, I think most would be surprised to learn that organ meats actually far surpass most plants for nutrient density and at the top of that list is liver. Organ meats contain some of the most highly prized nutrients in concentrations hard to find anywhere else. In general, organ meats are between 10 and 100 times higher in nutrients than corresponding muscle meats. The nutritional profile of liver is exceptional. Here are the nutrients found in a 3.5-ounce (100-gram) serving of beef liver. Eating a single serving of liver can help you meet your daily recommended amount of all of these vitamins and minerals, reducing your risk of nutrient deficiency. Liver is a great source of high-quality protein. One of the common concerns about eating liver is that it contains toxins. However, the liver does not store toxins**.** In fact, its job is to process toxins and make them safe by turning them into something that can be safely removed from the body. So, do not have any worries about toxins in the liver because it is not an issue. **Another concern about eating liver is it may cause issues with excessive vitamin A** While there are concerns of toxicity due to overconsumption of vitamin A, these concerns stem from studies in which moderate doses of synthetic vitamin A were found to cause problems and even contribute to birth defects. But, this does not happen with natural vitamin A found in high-quality liver. Vitamin A sourced from real, whole foods is an extremely important nutrient for human health and does not cause problems except in extremely, extremely large amounts. When people began taking synthetic vitamin A supplements, this was when we began to see vitamin A toxicity. A good recommendation for liver is one 100-gram serving of only grass-fed beef (about four ounces) once or twice each week. Here is a good online company to purchase grass-fed liver: If the thought of eating liver simply turns you off then I recommend liver + additional organ meat supplements. Vitamin B12 deficiency can lead to issues including pernicious anemia, vascular disease, stroke, autoimmune conditions, fatigue and dementia. True B12 cannot be found in plants or sunlight and liver is THE richest source of B12. - **Vitamin A:** Vitamin A is important for normal vision, immune function and reproduction. It also helps organs like the heart and kidneys function properly. You were misled if you grew up hearing the phrase “eat your carrots for healthy eyesight.” Yes, carrots (and other vegetables) contain Vitamin A, but it’s not in the bioavailable form, retinol, as found in liver**.** Beta carotene is the type of Vitamin A in veggies. Our bodies must convert beta carotene to retinol before we can actually make use of it. Unfortunately, the conversion rate is pretty poor. - **Riboflavin (B2**): Riboflavin is important for cellular development and function. It also helps turn food into energy. - **Folate (B9)**: Folate is an essential nutrient that plays a role in cell growth and the formation of DNA. - **Iron:** Iron is another essential nutrient that helps carry oxygen around the body. The iron in liver is heme iron, the kind most easily absorbed by the body. - **Copper:** Copper acts like a key to activate a number of enzymes, which then help regulate energy production, iron metabolism and brain function. - **Choline:** Choline is important for brain development and liver function. - **CoQ10 is** a nutrient that is especially important for cardiovascular function. --- ## URL: https://www.choosenewleaf.com/supplement-sourcing-staff-and-technology-updates-revamped-genetic-program-and-more ### Title: Supplement Sourcing, Staff and Technology Updates, Revamped Genetic Program and More ### Page ID: 7817708 ### Content: # Note from Dr. Trites #  Office & Technology Update # Genetic Program—Revamped # A Note from Katelynn Supplement Sourcing, Staff and Technology Updates, Revamped Genetic Program and More I’ve been working on a new project, or an old one depending on how you look at it. For my own health journey, I take inventory of what has happened in the last month, quarter and year for myself, my spouse, our children, and grandchildren. Then that extends to our family, my mentors, close family and friends who believe in what I do and trust what I’m doing for them. While the majority of my family have had vast health improvements, over the last several holidays, baby showers, and family visits I’m getting similar questions. Do I need to take all of my supplements every day? Is there a powder or a liquid I can take vs a pill or vice versa? Is this the best product available? Is there a more affordable product? My family has these questions and so do our patients. For the past eight years, we have had input on supplement formulas, and I have thousands of dollars of research using blood tests to determine if a product is working or not. Then, I have to decipher whether it is a population miss or an individual miss based on their lifestyle and unique genetics. (This is a good reason to have your genetics run through our genetic program). Over the past four years, many companies such as Nestle, Herbalife, Fullscript and hundreds of pharmaceutical companies are snatching up big players in the supplemental nutrition world. Year after year, I have had to fire companies for violating our terms of quality and recently one of our biggest companies with tons of research, data, and publications bowed down and are now outsourcing their products. Ugh! I believe my patients and my family deserve the best product, and of course, at the best price. Many of these corporate takeovers have changed the quality of the industry. When I first began my health journey, I learned to read labels. Many big box stores, including those that don’t make 100% of their profits from supplements, cut major corners. When it comes to supplements, you get what you pay for. Think about this. I’m sure you’ve heard our planet isn’t entirely safe or clean, right? So, if you have to pay a fisherperson to hand catch in a non-polluted area to get your fish oil to make fish oil supplements, or you could pay a fish farm that raises them in pens and is polluted, which one is cheaper? When you’re a big box store, the bottom line is generally maximum profit. The smaller companies, under $100 million in revenue, understand they are fighting for the scraps. But, it’s not really scraps. Their customers are educated people who want to feel better and not fall apart as we age. This is where the nitty-gritty takes place. I have created a webinar so you can learn how to read labels, what are hidden names for gluten, MSG and other triggers, and what to do at home to help you not accidentally expose yourself. Included in this webinar are how to reduce or prevent autoimmunity and helpful lifestyle knowledge you need at home. It’s around six hours of information for $150. Or, you can always make an appointment for 1:1 time to learn about how this applies specifically to you. For my companies from whom I choose to buy supplements, I demand spec sheets for mold, fungus, heavy metals, pesticides, herbicides and other toxins. Wouldn’t you like to know that your supplement has been tested for these things? Many in the nutrition industry are not! That is because the FDA does not have a stance on the dietary supplement industry—unless someone dies from taking them. Then, the FDA gets involved. So, you could be taking a load of beetle dung for your arthritis or a supplement that is no longer viable because it sat on a shelf for three years or in a warehouse that had unregulated temperatures or a number of other factors that negate the effective ingredients. In the end, you spend a lot of money on a supplement and you gain nothing. This is my pet peeve for wholesale nutrition companies. They need to do better. Some patients do not want to wait until we restock a product so they buy from a big box store or Amazon to save a few dollars and, in most cases, the product is expired or inferior based on the factors I just mentioned. It’s a difficult and expensive lesson to learn but I want people to be healthy and not bamboozled. So, over the next few months, you will see some changes in the products we carry. With those changes, I also expect to see changes in everyone’s pocketbook because many of the products we have tested and are moving to are less expensive, or are more products for the same price, or have a longer shelf life. Be well, Rachel has been now working directly with Dr. Trites for the last couple of months as his assistant during patient appointments. For now, she will now be your main point of contact for patient care, including ordering lab tests. She will continue to help at the front desk as needed. Katelynn will begin working as our nutrition coach. She will be the main point of contact for the SHAPE ReClaim, Keto, and Prolon programs. She can help with your questions about your specific dietary need and can even help with meal plans! You can schedule a 30-minute, online consultation ($50) with her by emailing her at assistant@choosenewleaf.com or by calling the office at 469-491-7535. There is a note from Katelynn about SHAPE at the end of this newsletter. Angela will continue to fill in at the reception desk as needed. We hope to add a part-time person to help Rachel and Katelynn. We have had some great candidates but we are still looking for the right person. If you know someone who is passionate about conservative, holistic health practices, enjoys meeting and talking to new people, excels at multitasking, and knows their way around a computer, please send them our way! Jordan is back from maternity leave and will continue to oversee our Oklahoma clinic. We are glad to have her back! We are very close to introducing our new patient portal! Our upgrade will also include a new appointment scheduling system so be looking for more details about that new interface as well. We have had a few technical snafus but hope to be ready to launch mid-summer. You’ll also notice a new credit card processing device at the Dallas office. This is a contactless process that takes Apple Pay, Google Pay, and Samsung Pay. We plan to be able to accept cryptocurrency in the future. Let us know if that’s something that would interest you! As a reminder, we have the ability to save your preferred payment method on file. Let us know if you’d like to save that information with our clinic for faster checkouts or supplement refills. About a decade ago, there were only a handful of players in the genetic testing genre. Today, there are hundreds. Many are now owned, like supplement companies, by Big Pharma and many sell your data. I, and hopefully you, have issues with this. Not to mention, none of these companies, to date, are following the research with genetic testing. In 2019, I completed a four-year program in genetics with Dr. Dunn and worked with her providing insight on correlating blood tests. At the first of the year, Dr. Dunn launched her own genetic testing company that follows the research. Compared to the big players, 23 & Me and Ancestry, she tests depending on the year you were tested, between 90-400 applicable genes for health. This is a game-changer. What if you’ve had your genes tested? Well, we still have your raw data and we can input that information. There are four specific programs Dr. Dunn runs, methylation, mood and personality, specific diet recommendations for your genes, and biochemical pathways for where you are stuck in your health journey. Any one of these updated add-ons is for our current genetic program enrollees at $100 per report. If you haven’t had your genes evaluated, consider receiving your personalized plan for health. Over the past 16 months, the world has changed and there are more people in need now than when we started the charity. Struggling to know what you should be eating or with unwanted weight?  Don’t know how to shop or plan meals? Are you on Keto, Shape Reclaimed, Prolon, AIP or Paleo? I can meet with you and help you decide how to plan, shop and best utilize the dietary program that works best for you. If you have unwanted weight and inflammation we have a recommendation for you! SHAPE Reclaimed is a great anti-inflammatory protocol and a positive side effect to releasing toxins and decreasing inflammation in the body is shedding toxic weight that your body holds onto! This program is only available under a practitioner and I am here to help. I will talk through the protocol, determine which program is best suited for you, explain the SHAPE ReClaimed supplement and baseline urine to monitor your bio-individuality—all from the comfort of your home. That’s right, all nutrition consults are done online. Both use a personal approach that works with a patient to not only improve their symptoms, but to find why they exist in the first place and address those causes. Integration combines conventional testing with holistic treatments. There is a primary emphasis on treating your body and mind through nutrition, exercise, diet and in-office evaluations and/or treatments. As an alternative office to medicine, New Leaf utilizes a functional approach. We don’t blindly test until we understand why a person is experiencing specific symptoms and conditions. It’s a systematic approach from a lengthy history read before your initial visit. Followed by an exam based on your history and further questions that can’t be addressed from paperwork alone. Following these tests, our doctors customize personalized treatments to address the root cause of each condition. Functional integration is different from other practices because the emphasis is on the why? Rather than a treatment for the symptoms. Yes, we want you feeling good as soon as possible. Our patients thrive on us being able to get them to function so they aren’t going from doctor to doctor just for relief. But instead efficient management of their condition. For example, you could have a diagnosis and treatment plan and feel better when you go to your current doctor—but what happens if you stop your therapy or treatment? Most of the time, it comes back. So, was the cause discovered? The answer is generally, “no.” Functional integration looks at how and what and also asks why? Research into each patient’s medical history and family background are a priority. Our programs includes a dive into your genetic makeup because of its importance to evaluate for present and future health. No matter how big or small, every detail of your personal health story plays a part in your complete health. Our doctors are committed to uncovering the cause of symptoms. Once discovered, our doctors treat underlying causes to reduce or reversing chronic diseases. During your journey, New Leaf provides the gold standard for testing and treatment to every individual. We use the most up-to-date methods of alternative, functional integration to get answers and results. New Leafs’ patients appreciate our patient-centered, root-cause approach to your health. Most doctors only try to determine if your thyroid is high or low. This is a problem because the thyroid is not that simple. In Functional Medicine, we understand that there are many elements that must work well in order for you to have good thyroid health. Dr. Trites’ eight-step process identifies the root cause of your thyroid issues. This is the only way to have true thyroid health—often without a prescription! The clinical definition of hyperthyroidism, many times referred to as hyperthyroid, is the overactivity of the thyroid gland resulting in a rapid heartbeat and an increased rate of metabolism. The clinical definition of hypothyroidism, many times referred to as hypothyroid, is the abnormally low activity of the thyroid gland resulting in retardation of growth and mental development in both children and adults. In both situations, the thyroid gland, a dual-lobed gland located in the front of the neck, is not producing the optimal amount of hormones to meet the needs of your body. Thyroid hormones regulate the way our bodies use energy. Schedule a free, 10-minute phone consultation with Dr. Trites’ assistant or jump right in and schedule a consultation with Dr. Trites. Click the Schedule an Appointment button at the top of this page to learn more. As a functional medicine doctor, Dr. Trites, will ensure the right tests are ordered and provide an expert evaluation of the results. He’ll help you uncover the true cause of your health problems, AND then guide you through the process of healing. Dr. Trites’ goal is to help his patients along a path of natural healing. Dr. Trites guides hundreds of people through this process every year. Whether you are dealing with hyperthyroid issues or hypothyroid issues, we can help! Our approach is truly customized to the needs of each patient. There’s no cookie-cutter approach to the process. No two patients are alike so no two treatment plans are exactly alike. Although many speak of the body’s “energy,” we are also so dealing with the nervous system. More importantly, brain function. All the changes observed are monitored and mediated through the nervous system. When someone trained is performing clinical kinesiology, they are looking for functional short circuits which can be corrected as opposed to “dead” circuits of the body. Dead circuits are out of a natural or conservative scope of practice. An example may be diabetic neuropathy where the nervous system is no longer communicating with the body. Another example, there are muscles associated with organ-related energy systems to be explained below. These imbalances could state pathology, a neurological condition, an emotional condition, a lack or excess of a nutrient, or an injury. There are many people who muscle test and consider it kinesiology—but is it? How many people do kinesiology well? In my humble opinion, based on knowledge of functional testing, not as many as one would hope, probably less than ten percent. We can all make thoughts in our heads and perceive weakness or strength, swaying or stability, be content, or in distress. A standard muscle testing is a basis for kinesiology and one common factor is observed, weak to strong and strong to weak. Learning how to test subtle changes in muscles will be a lifelong learning experience as each individual is different in healthy, biochemistry, strength, and function. Many muscle-testing technicians use the arm pull-down test. Is this adequate, precise, and infallible? No. Nothing is perfect and the precision of an arm pull-down test is far from precise as over 20 muscles could be brought into the test. At best it’s adequate in a time of haste. What does a change in muscle strength mean? It could mean nothing, fatigue, toxicity, deficiency, change in metabolic demand, etc. So the practitioner needs to have some working knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and of course the nervous system. If it’s an organ, muscle, or nerve pathway, which fibers does it follow and where does it land in the brain? If there is weakness without, what does that mean? Are there blood tests to substantiate an organic or nutritional weakness? Is there a stressor or mechanoreceptor out of balance? I absolutely love kinesiology but you can see why there are so many different answers for a weak or strong muscle. We really need to know the frequency that is impacting the muscle fiber, its source, and where and how to fix the pathway—which is when we are performing or receiving kinesiology-based methods at their best. Of course, medical testing to back up findings keeps the practitioner honest and addresses the patient’s concerns. This includes in the womb and during natural birth. The microbiome is yeast, viruses, bacteria and other organisms that are beneficial and symbiotic to you. And you get much of your microbiome through natural birth. This is important because a child’s microbiome will change during a cesarean. This sets them up for many health challenges vs. natural childbirth The microbiome is 50-55% of your body weight from cells that are symbiotic with us. It consists of bacteria, yeast, fungi and parasites. Gains in strength and food tolerance are better in infants when given foods one at a time to identify, metabolize and dampen inflammation. When we have patients with a lot of microbiome issues, we start them with a very diverse shake to help decrease the inflammation. The plan is so they can absorb the food and nutrition that we are suggesting for their case. This also creates diversity which will help their microbiome. We combine this shake with an in-home pulse test for subtle food sensitivities. Or, we replace their microbiome with well-researched organisms. Some foods affect your microbiome. The most common are wheat, gluten, milk, peanuts, corn and milk. Soy, sugar, citrus, shellfish and coffee and food additives are second. Look for replacement foods before beginning, or you may feel starved even though you’re not. Replacements can help you cope with the loss of something once savored. If your microbiome is not intact, you will crave foods to feed them and not you. If you’re not already doing it, limit the main inflammatory foods. These are gluten, dairy, sugar, soy, eggs, corn, nightshade vegetables, alcohol and refined foods. Inflammatory foods and inflammatory conditions also affect your microbiome. This is when you start, and I know it sounds like a lot. You can eat as many dark leafy green vegetables along with other vegetables and fruit in the beginning. You can have nuts and seeds and healthy sources of animal protein unless you feel you can’t digest much, then avoid nuts. As a side note, peanuts are not a nut. Healthy animal proteins are free-range, grass-fed and grass-finished and antibiotic-free. If this doesn’t work when you start reducing foods, there is much more to your case. We have to test for autoimmune conditions or advanced digestive issues. Many people are allergic to their favorite foods, and they crave them because they have difficulty absorbing them. Often allergies get manifested by structural disturbances that become neurological. This, in turn, changes how you digest. Yes, a rolled ankle can change your digestion. Some food allergies are due to food introduced too soon or combined during infancy instead of one at a time. For an infant, or if you are introducing food to a small child coming off of breastfeeding or formula, consider this. For helping digestion, parents should introduce one to three foods a week separate from other foods already using. Remember, this is not for those who are anaphylactic or are known to have trips to the ER for food allergies. Don’t test them that way. Seek medical advice about dangerous or anaphylactic allergies. To run an in-home food allergy test, select suspected foods or a food group and avoid them for three weeks. Read every food label! You may be surprised that even your healthy foods have ingredients such as gluten or MSG. Even a small amount, like a bite, can trigger a negative allergic response. This is not full-borne anaphylaxis allergies. Those are different antibodies and very severe. They are food allergies causing inflammation and decreased function. Avoidance allows the body to clear its immune properties. When you begin to reintroduce a suspected food or foods, do it one food at a time. Eat the suspect food throughout the day, along with non-allergic foods. Pay attention to any reactions. This could be headaches, dizziness, nausea, or other symptoms. Especially a symptom that has gone away or decreased during the three-week period. If you have a reaction, you need to avoid it for 60-90 days. Wait three days before reintroducing the next food, especially if you have more than one sensitivity or questioned food. How can you tell if anything is good or bad? Again, check your body. If you eat a food and your pulse is, for example, 60 beats per minute, make a note. And after eating a possible problematic food, the pulse goes up more than ten beats per minute. Then you will want to remove the food from the diet for 90 days because this is a positive pulse test and a potential problem. If in 90 days it tests ok with your pulse, you may eat it in rotation but not daily. This is how you most likely had the problem began. If you’re home and you have ten weeks to simplify and decide what is inflammatory or not, here’re a few things to review for your food. You’ll want to observe see if it’ll affect your mood, energy your brain through elimination. When you cut the foods and then add them back, you’ll find out if they’re inflammatory. Most of the time, you get an inflammatory response: a symptom, a headache, fatigue or pain. Remember, there are many variables for a diet, whether such as blood type, lifestyle or common allergies. If you are a sugar addict sticking to this for three weeks will help with your sugar cravings. You might also find that symptoms such as bloating, sinus congestion, and excess gas also reduce or go away. Introduce one of these inflammatory foods once you’ve gone past your two or three weeks or none. Observe symptoms and in three days, introduce another. So, let’s say you ate corn on the 15th day and you bloat or swell, a symptom you haven’t been doing for that time interval. That’s a great indicator that corn is a problem. You’ll need to wait three days or more until the swelling is gone before introducing another food. We recommend you chart your foods so you know what is good and what isn’t and when you can eat them again if ever. If these methods have failed, a food allergy sensitivity test should be your next step. This is available on our website or other sites. Yet, this is buyer beware for food sensitivity testing. Most food sensitivity companies test only raw food. My question is, how many people eat raw beef, chicken or fish? Few. There’s a difference between how your body reacts or has the ability to react to raw or cooked food. When you are tested, you need both of these tested. Furthermore, one may not be allergic to foods such as wheat, tomato or cheese. But combine them in something called a pizza, and it changes the expression of the proteins. And yes, one can indeed be allergic to pizza and not the individual ingredients. Frustrating, yes. But a doctor who understands this can help you get there. The gold standard for any food allergy testing is Elisa blood serum testing. Skin scratch and cytotoxic testing are hard to reproduce and, in my humble opinion, a waste of good money. If you didn’t hear me before, a strong word of caution. Do not self-test any severe allergic foods! This rotation does not work for severe allergies as it is a completely different mechanism for the immune system. You are putting yourself in harm and not taking your health seriously enough. **A glass of wine, a beer, a cocktail? A little bread and cheese? No harm, right?** Alcohol—when is it ok? Alcohol will damage the liver as well as destroy the brain. Alcohol kills brain cells that are important in communicating specific functions to your body. Other organs are also implicated with its consumption, such as the gastrointestinal tract and the pancreas. Alcohol is sugar in nature and causes an acidic imbalance. This impairs the immune system and allowing processes such as yeast, bacteria, virus, mold, fungus, parasites, and, unfortunately, cancer, to go unnoticed. Those who are carbohydrate intolerant suffer the same effects as a full bore alcoholic, even with small amounts of alcohol. Their body can at times convert sugar to alcohol. Or, the intestines have the wrong bacteria and convert carbohydrates to alcohol. That’s rough. We actually have patients who were auto fermenting. I hope you noticed I said “were.” We actually understand the mechanism. It’s a bizarre conversation with a patient who eats a sandwich and some fries and then blows into a breathalyzer over the legal limit. But what about wine and its benefits? There are many studies about the benefits and the effects. But the dose for when the alcohol outweighs the benefits is only four ounces. I haven’t recently observed a four-ounce pour at any restaurant or from my wife at dinner. But these are the guidelines for a beneficial response. My goal in this process is to help your body work more efficiently, heal naturally and feel better. This is a newer concept of how we work. How do our genetics play a role? What is the expression? What should you eat for your genes and lifestyle? Do you have any lab results that are out of medical range, functional range? How is your brain firing? Do your hormones work properly? Your nervous system is 37 miles long in each of us and senses things beyond normal comprehension. Have you ever walked into a room only to felt you shouldn’t be there? What’s the energy in a church compared to a prison, the feelings of a wedding versus a funeral? How can someone have a limb removed yet have phantom pain as if they never lost the limb at all? This is our nervous system talking to us. A bad feeling is a gut feeling, part of the enteric nervous system of your gut. Phantom pain is a part of the brain for sensation and sorrow or joy or another part. Your nervous system has many options for feeling and thought that are not limited to only a specific part of your brain. Looking at any and all options to help you recover and stay recovered is what we do. We investigate, test, retest and examine your results throughout your treatment plan. Did you know that your brain uses 20-30 percent of the calories you eat each day? Your cells, especially your brain cells, need specific types of high-quality nutrients to operate at peak performance. If you want to live a healthier, longer life with less pain then you must fuel your brain and body with high-quality nutrients. In short, we all have to eat right to think and function right. For the most part, we fail at eating right because we have been raised on a Standard American Diet, SAD for short. The U.S. is 35th in world health yet for decades we have been first in spending. That’s not the number one we should be focused on. Spending is not prevention. So, I’ve decided to write down a few highlights to get everyone started. We live in a toxic world with 350 different pesticides, 75,000 chemicals utilized in industry, herbicides, indoor and outdoor air pollution, xenohormones and more. It’s obvious we can’t avoid being exposed. I like my carpet where I watch football games but the carpet is made from chemicals. However, we can take efforts by being responsible for our environments and also what goes into and on our bodies. DIET is a four-letter word that doesn’t work. Lifestyle modification absolutely works. I promise you can do anything if you think big enough. You may have to modify, change, adapt and integrate any plan. But you **can** do it. It starts with believing it, making a plan, sticking to the plan, understanding it’s hard and that you will slip up and then making a commitment to start anew. It’s a marathon, not a sprint, so to speak. Food allergies and sensitivities have become much more common in today’s world. They are very complex and vastly overlooked when a health problem arises. The most common way to test for food allergies is with blood tests followed by an elimination diet. Certain questionable allergic foods are eliminated from the diet for three to nine months. Then they are reintroduced. This is easier said than done. We look at fatigue sufferers with a unique perspective! The cost of intermittent and chronic fatigue condition is in the billions. From lost productivity to a miserable quality of life, this condition can cripple an individual and their family. More and more Americans are reporting symptoms of fatigue ranging from brain fog, listlessness, feeling like a slow starter or complete exhaustion—just to name a few. Fatigue can affect both men and women at any age. There may be certain events that can trigger fatigue including but not limited to extreme stress, genetic predisposition, environmental factors, weakened immune system, hormonal imbalances, viruses including rubella, human herpesvirus 6, Ross River virus (RRV), Epstein-Barr (EBV), and others and also a wide range of bacterial infections. When it comes to identifying fatigue, chronic fatigue, and its part in your body and brain function, our office may do a little more than conventional doctors and traditional brain experts. Here’s why. Not everyone is wired, as illustrated in a textbook, and not every case is simplified as we read in the literature. Each patient is unique and different. Sure, we can run the same tests and have a plan for success. But each patient will eventually have different exercises, duration, and nutritional needs than another patient. This is because we all have differing lifestyles, genetics, and environmental factors playing vital roles in your health. Over the first few visits, we test most of our patients for over 60 causes of brain fog, declining memory, eyesight, declines in balance and coordination, headaches, and fatigue. This is in addition to structural deviations and metabolic conditions discovered through our examination and blood tests. We do this because most of our patients are more than just a rolled ankle. And, if you’re fortunate to have just a rolled ankle, the less you are inflamed and the faster your brain can communicate with digestion, immunity, and blood flow, the faster you will heal. You could have hidden infections, hormone imbalances, blood sugar handling issues, blood supply deficiencies, anemias, inflammation, digestive inefficiency, and many other causes to your health challenges. Often, when memory is declining, or something such as a mild tremor develops, patients quickly get into their doctor demanding tests. Our current standard of care is some basic testing, a series of questions, and then ordering standard blood tests and possibly a brain scan or MRI. The unfortunate reality of these scans is that for the radiologist to diagnose any neurodegenerative disease, for most patients, it is already too late, the damage is irreversible. Symptoms of chronic fatigue include but are not limited to memory loss, difficulty concentrating, enlarged lymph nodes in your neck or armpits, sleep that isn’t restful, headaches, chronic insomnia, and other sleep disorders, muscle pain, joint pain (without swelling or redness), and extreme exhaustion lasting more than 24 hours after physical or mental exercise. These symptoms can lead to depression, lifestyle changes, social isolation, inability to stay focused while at work, increased absences from work or other activities, or a feeling of helplessness. Because of the similarities between symptoms of chronic fatigue and many other conditions, it’s important to not self-diagnose. Schedule an appointment so we can properly diagnose the root cause of your fatigue. Luckily there are metabolic, genetic, and other laboratory tests that help decipher the cause of your health challenges, and most of these tests show health event clues and details years, if not decades before an MRI shows any severe and irreversible damage. Dr. Trites works with hundreds of people with Hashimoto’s every year. His singular goal is to help you uncover the root cause of your Hashimoto’s and get you feeling better. Because Hashimoto’s shows up differently for each person, and healing doesn’t happen overnight, working with an experienced Functional Medicine doctor can make the difference between being stuck in a state of declining health or living a vibrant, active life. Dr. Trites’ proven process will help restore your health and give you back the life you’ve been missing. The conventional treatment for Hashimoto’s is to treat your thyroid with a synthetic hormone prescription. While this may relieve some of your symptoms (for a little while), it’s a terrible long-term approach because it does nothing to calm down your immune system, which is attacking your thyroid. You must address the underlying cause of your Hashimoto’s, or your health will continue to get worse. The problem with traditional treatment is that most doctors believe Hashimoto’s is a thyroid problem. It’s not. Hashimoto’s is actually an autoimmune disease. Dr. Trites’ approach is to help you balance your immune system, which naturally manages the symptoms of your Hashimoto’s. Did you know that Hashimoto’s is not a thyroid problem? That’s right, the real problem isn’t your thyroid at all – it’s your immune system. With Hashimoto’s, your immune system is attacking your thyroid gland as if it’s a foreign invader. The conventional approach (taking thyroid prescriptions) never addresses the root cause. Medications only mask the symptoms, which leads to your health getting worse over time. Dr. Trites helps hundreds of people every year discover the triggers of their Hashimoto’s and start the healing process. Instead of simply masking problems, Dr. Trites uses the most effective means available – real food, supplements, lifestyle changes, and natural health care – to restore your health. *“I recommend Dr. Trites to everyone! He successfully* *diagnosed my thyroid issues and put me on track toward correcting the* *issue. Within months my thyroid is working as it should and did not have* *to take prescriptions, supplements, or medications!”* First, identify your triggers. Then, design a customized plan for your health situation and start the process of getting your life back. Dr. Trites guides hundreds of people through this process every year. The conventional approach to autoimmune disease is to prescribe potentially harmful, immune-suppressing drugs. While this may relieve your symptoms for a short while, it’s the most harmful treatment for anyone with autoimmune-related health issues. If you’re not in you doctors office weekly, there may be an alternative approach that can help you. Here’s the facts. Suppressing the immune system only masks the symptoms, and does NOT address what’s causing the problem in the first place. If immunosupressants are all that works for you, then natural treatments may be supportive but not necessarily the solution. For the other cases,if you don’t address the underlying cause of the problem, your autoimmune condition will continue to get worse, sending you into a downward spiral of failing health. New Leaf works with hundreds of people like you every year. Our singular goal is to help you uncover the root cause of your health issues and get you feeling better. Because autoimmune issues show up differently for each person, and healing doesn’t happen overnight, working with an experienced functional integration practitioner can make the difference between declining health and a vibrant, active life. New Leafs’ proven process will help restore your health and give you back the life you’ve been missing. Many people get trapped in a downward spiral of failing health once they’ve been diagnosed with an autoimmune disease. It doesn’t have to be this way. There is hope. New Leaf helps hundreds of people every year discover the triggers of their autoimmune disease and start the healing process. Asking why, finding the root causes, and restoring your health is the underlying principle of Functional Integration. Instead of simply masking problems, New Leaf uses the most effective means available—real food, supplements, lifestyle changes, and natural health care to restore your health. *“First I’d like to say, “Thank you, Dr. Trites.” You’ve been an inspiration and the health program has given me new hope in life. I wasn’t even a patient of Dr. Trites but one of my friends told me I needed to see this guy who’d help me get things turned around with his help. After a few blood tests and the initial consult to cater* *to my individual physiology as he put it, I was put on specific monitored food intake for my metabolism.* *Dr. Trites took the time in our initial visit to demonstrate to me that I have a blood sugar handling issues and I needed to be properly tested. As there is type II diabetes and heart disease in my family Dr. Trites explained natural therapies and with current diagnostic procedures he has the ability to find and begin a reversal of what I am now certain to have been on my way to dying from. As this program comes to its end I’m looking forward to becoming a regular patient of Dr. Trites to help me with the other health concerns I have in my life and that of my family. While there’s no magic pill or lotion that will give you instant relief from your outbreaks, there is a highly effective, lasting solution that will significantly reduce the number of outbreaks you have AND make the few outbreaks that you do have barely noticeable. It’s tempting to think that antibiotics and over-the-counter creams will fix the problem. But they just don’t. Rather than spending your money (and time) seeing dermatologists who don’t understand HS, or trying every new product on the shelf, why not see an expert now and start to heal your HS for good? Aside from the inherent risks of surgery, the problem with this approach is that it doesn’t address the root cause. Please don’t consider this for treating your HS. After surgery, boils reappear in other areas of the body and even sometimes on the new skin grafts. There really is a better way. The outbreaks you experience are a symptom of a deeper problem in your body— which is why traditional treatments don’t work. HS is not a skin condition. It’s an autoimmune condition. Because doctors and dermatologists often don’t understand the nature of autoimmunity and how it affects the skin, the common treatments are simply ineffective. Antibiotics, immune-suppressing drugs, and even surgery do not address the underlying problem. *“Dr. Trites helped me out of my very bad health issues that no else had answers too.* *If it was not for Dr. Trites my life would not be what it is today. Healthy and full of energy. I followed all his recommendations and that is what got me on track.”* The information provided on this website is for informational purposes only and is not intended as a substitute for professional medical advice, diagnosis or treatment.
